Showtime is back at it, reigniting the world of Dexter with a fresh prequel series, Original Sin, and they’ve just dropped the first trailer, so get ready.
Though Dexter wrapped up over a decade ago, the current trend of reboots and reviving beloved franchises has given this once-hot series another shot at popularity. In 2022, we were introduced to Dexter: New Blood, a sequel set a decade post the original finale. Now, Paramount and Showtime are teasing us again with the first glimpse of Dexter: Original Sin. Before diving in, be warned—spoilers for the New Blood finale are ahead as the prequel interestingly connects to it. Proceed with caution!
In the trailer, you might catch familiar scenes where Dexter is sprawled out in the snow, blood pooling from the wound inflicted by his son, Harrison. While he’s treated in the hospital, the narrative takes us through a whirlwind of memories, setting the stage for the prequel. “Dexter: Original Sin transports us to 1991 Miami, where we witness Dexter (played by Patrick Gibson) transitioning from an ordinary student into a vengeful serial killer,” the official plot tease unfolds. “As Dexter grapples with his insatiable bloodlust, he embarks on a journey to control his inner darkness.”
Caught up in his transformation, Dexter receives mentorship from his father, Harry (portrayed by Christian Slater), adopting a Code that guides him to eliminate those he deems deserving while evading law enforcement. This becomes particularly tricky when young Dexter starts a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
Fans will be delighted to hear that Michael C. Hall returns, lending his voice as Dexter’s narrator, and Sarah Michelle Gellar from Buffy fame is set to make a guest appearance. While being a prequel means Dexter’s ultimate fate is no mystery, the series promises a thrilling ride nonetheless.
Plus, the series might just answer lingering questions from the New Blood finale. With another sequel, Dexter: Resurrection, on the horizon, don’t be surprised if Original Sin wraps up with Dexter alive and kicking. To uncover all the twists, mark your calendars for December 13, when the show hits Paramount+.
