Itch.io, the independent video game platform, has announced an exciting event scheduled for November 29, referred to as Creator Day, as reported by Engadget. This Friday, every dollar you spend on the site will go straight into the developers’ pockets, with itch.io waving its usual 10% commission fee.
The timing of this Creator Day couldn’t be better, as it aligns with itch.io’s annual Autumn Sale, which kicks off on November 27 and runs through December 5. This annual event attracts a vibrant community of developers, who this year have contributed over 7,400 projects. The sale offers an eclectic mix of digital and physical games, along with resources for those interested in game development.
Introduced in 2021, Creator Day was itch.io’s response to support game developers facing financial hardships during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Spencer Hayes, itch.io’s director of business and content, shared the company’s ethos with Polygon, saying, “We’re supported by our awesome community every day and we wanted to set a day where we could return the favor. It’s been hard out there for a lot of folks and we figured we’d help out how we can.”
Itch.io is already a standout platform thanks to its developer-friendly revenue model, claiming only 10% of sales compared to the steeper cuts from giants like Steam, the PlayStation Store, the Microsoft Store, and Apple’s App Store. With initiatives like Creator Day and thoughtfully-organized charity events, itch.io further distinguishes itself from its more well-known competitors, continually striving to benefit its creative community.
