Shuhei Yoshida, the former president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios and a staunch advocate for indie games, recently declared his departure from the company after an impressive 31 years of service.
Yoshida, who spent over three decades at PlayStation, shared that he’ll be stepping down from his position as head of the indie initiative. During his tenure, he was instrumental in bringing more than 429 games to life. Yoshida became a prominent supporter of indie developers during his time at the company, having first taken the helm as SIE Worldwide Studios’ president in 2008. He later transitioned to lead the indie initiative in 2019, dedicating significant effort to spotlighting indie projects.
Just a quick glance at his Twitter illustrates his passion for indie games. He’s even championing Red Candle Games’ “Nine Sols” in his biography now that it’s set to launch on PlayStation. His enthusiasm for indie games is palpable; he shared on the PlayStation Blog that attending events like E3 always had him gravitating toward the indie booths. For him, leading the indie initiative was truly a “dream job.”
Reflecting on his long career with PlayStation, which began in February 1993 — even before the original console came to market — Yoshida has amassed numerous proud moments. However, one that he cherishes most concerns the indie gem “Journey.” “Out of all these experiences, the moment that stands out the most is when ‘Journey’ won the Game of the Year Award,” Yoshida reminisced.
This indie game, which was released exclusively on PlayStation Network, stood out in the sea of AAA titles. With its completion time of around three hours, “Journey” still managed to beat heavyweight competitors to clinch the prestigious award, marking a significant milestone for the industry. Yoshida recounted a poignant story about the game’s creator, Jenova Chen, who shared a heartfelt story at a summit. Chen talked about receiving a letter from a young girl who had lost her father. Playing “Journey” helped her reflect on her loss and provided solace, enabling her to move forward. Yoshida noted how the entire room was uplifted by the sentiment, showcasing just how profound an impact such a small game could have.
While Yoshida hasn’t yet revealed his next ventures, it’s a safe bet that he’ll continue to champion indie games with the same fervor and dedication.
