What You Need to Know
Diving into the world of gaming, it’s hard not to be captivated by FromSoftware’s impressive track record. Known for iconic titles like Elden Ring, Dark Souls, and Sekiro among others, they have firmly placed themselves on the map with their hit games on Xbox and Windows PC platforms. Recently, the studio’s mastermind, Hidetaka Miyazaki, sat down for a chat, giving us a glimpse of what could be next. Although it seems a direct sequel to Elden Ring isn’t right around the corner, the studio is exploring a medley of different game genres.
In the gaming community, few names wield the kind of respect that FromSoftware does. With a legacy that includes game-changers like Demon’s Souls and Bloodborne, the studio has not only pioneered entire genres but has also inspired countless imitators. Their latest triumph, Elden Ring, has propelled their success even further, capturing the hearts of mainstream gamers like never before.
Unsurprisingly, speculation abounds about what FromSoftware might do next. Fans have their fingers crossed for many things, from the awaited expansion Shadow of the Erdtree to the successful mech combat of Armored Core VI. Elden Ring continues to resonate deeply, maintaining its place as a top-rated title on consoles and PCs. Intriguingly, thanks to a recent rule tweak, it could even bag the coveted "Game of the Year" award at Geoff Keighley’s 2025 Game Awards, setting a historic precedent for download content.
One might think FromSoftware would waste no time diving into a follow-up to capitalize on the momentum of Elden Ring and its expansion. However, Hidetaka Miyazaki has different ideas.
In an insightful conversation reported by Game Watch and brought to attention by the industrious @Okami13_, Miyazaki shared that the team is striving to achieve new scales and maintain the spirit of adventure in Shadow of the Erdtree. The exploration of the uncharted is pivotal for them, as well as leveraging fresh insights acquired during development for future projects.
So, what’s on the horizon? While an immediate Elden Ring 2 isn’t in the cards, Miyazaki didn’t close the door on further exploring the series. "Currently, an Elden Ring sequel isn’t on the table, though that doesn’t mean we won’t expand the Elden Ring universe," he said.
FromSoftware is already busy with multiple ventures spanning a variety of genres. Interestingly, not all upcoming creations will fall under Miyazaki’s direct purview. Take, for instance, Armored Core VI, which was helmed by Masaru Yamamura. Miyazaki has previously hinted at wanting to elevate the franchise further in upcoming works.
Bloodborne 2? Sekiro 2? Armored Core 7? Ninja Blade 2?
The possibilities for FromSoftware seem almost boundless right now. During a special PlayStation anniversary event, there was a tantalizing hint of Bloodborne, accompanied by the word "persistence," sparking hope for a sequel or remaster of the hauntingly elegant 2015 game.
Given Elden Ring’s sweeping success, the studio has many pathways wide open. The Dark Souls series, although quiet of late, retains its iconic status. The Armored Core line holds promising potential for growth and sophistication. And who could forget the lesser-known Xbox-only Ninja Blade from 2009? Okay, maybe that one’s a bit far-fetched!
What’s undeniable is that Hidetaka Miyazaki and the creative minds at FromSoftware rank among the most innovative in today’s gaming world. Whether they’re cooking up a sequel, reboot, remake, or something altogether new, there’s every reason to believe that another hit is on the way from this celebrated developer.
