Amazon’s about to release its animated video game anthology series, Secret Level, later this month. One surprise element? It still includes an episode on Concord, despite the game no longer being around.
After the unfortunate news that Concord bombed so hard that its studio had to shut down, leaving the game never to see the light of day again, there’s been this looming question: what about its episode in Secret Level? Amazon has stayed the course, deciding to air the episode anyway. In a chat with GamesRadar, series creators Tim Miller and Dave Willson explained that there was never a discussion about pulling it. “It wasn’t even a thing,” Miller said, refuting any idea of canceling it. “Amazon never hinted at it, and neither did we.”
You would think having games like Unreal Tournament in the collection, which are no longer active, would remove some of the sting. Yet, this situation with Concord is different. Despite this, the creators have an interesting tale to tell alongside stunning animation that so many dedicated themselves to. Miller said, “I can’t imagine why we’d hold it back from the fans,” addressing potential critics asking “Why are they doing this?”
Miller expressed his pride in the episode, lamenting the game’s absence. He said, “The developers were good folks striving to give their best. It doesn’t change our commitment to sharing this project we poured our hearts into.”
Wilson chimed in to highlight that the show’s essence is to span across games of past, present, and future—even if, in this case, Concord’s tale is a bit too fresh and bittersweet. However, perhaps the episode offers a glimpse into a future that remained elusive, even if not widely desired.
