Indie publisher Reforged Studios has recently expanded its portfolio by acquiring its third development company this year—Yellow Lab Games. While the financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed, it has been confirmed that Yellow Lab Games will continue to operate autonomously. Their current project, a roguelite RPG titled Metavoidal, is anticipated to debut on Steam in the first quarter of 2025.
This acquisition follows Reforged’s purchase of Ground Shatter and Extra Mile Studios back in August. Reflecting on these strategic moves, Reforged CEO and founder Peter Van Der Watt expressed his enthusiasm: “Being from South Africa, I’ve always recognized the exceptional game development talent present in the country,” he shared. “Yellow Lab Games caught my attention quite a while ago, especially after witnessing the positive feedback on Metavoidal, which marks their initial step into PC and console gaming.”
Peter Van Der Watt has been a passionate advocate for South African game development since relocating to Scotland to establish his first game studio in 2011. He noted, “That passion is now shared by the entire Reforged board. When the chance to bring [Yellow Lab head of studios] David Hecker and his talented team into our fold came up, we jumped at it without hesitation. We’re thrilled to welcome some of South Africa’s top gaming talent to Reforged, and we believe this is just the start of a broader commitment to investing in the thriving gaming scene across Africa.”
