LocalThunk, the creative mind behind Balatro, recently took a lighthearted jab at PEGI’s rating system after his innovative deck-building roguelike received an 18+ classification. LocalThunk, who operates from Canada under a veil of anonymity, humorously questioned whether incorporating real gambling mechanics might actually result in a lower rating. He pointed to EA Sports FC 25, a game packed with such features, yet astonishingly rated PEGI 3, as a paradoxical example.
The harsh PEGI 18 rating for Balatro stems from its educational poker mechanics, which PEGI argues could facilitate gambling. However, the game’s creator has never harbored an affinity for poker. In a February 2024 chat with PC Gamer, LocalThunk revealed his disinterest in the game. Further reflecting on his distaste for gambling, he expressed on social media that he had laid down strict conditions in his will, barring the possibility of Balatro ever falling into the hands of gambling entities. While Balatro’s gameplay bears a superficial resemblance to poker, the intention was far from promoting gambling activities.
Interestingly, Balatro has been rated quite differently by the ESRB, who recognized the clear distinction between the game’s strategic elements and actual gambling. Tagged as appropriate for ages 10 and up by ESRB, even the stringent German USK set a slightly higher threshold, deeming it fit for players 12 and older.
This isn’t the first time LocalThunk has aired his grievances about PEGI. During a Reddit AMA in March 2024, he labeled the high age rating as both “unwarranted” and disappointing. Nonetheless, PEGI’s decision did little to hinder Balatro’s success. By December 2024, it had sold over 3.5 million copies and captured three Game Awards, tying with Metaphor: ReFantazio for the second-highest number of wins.
For those who haven’t delved into its world yet, Balatro is a poker-themed roguelike deck builder that lures players into creating powerful synergies and executing exhilarating combos. As you engage in crafting robust poker hands and incorporating game-altering Jokers, the objective is to gather sufficient chips to outsmart challenging game mechanics and triumph over formidable opponents.
Despite the hurdles, LocalThunk’s debut game has captivated a massive audience by skillfully blending strategy and suspense, affirming its place as one of 2024’s standout indie hits.
