Lately, there’s been a surge in leaks surrounding Nintendo’s anticipated new console, though it’s important to note that the influx of leaks hasn’t brought a significant amount of fresh information. However, an intriguing report popped up from Reddit user NextHandheld, who stated they’ve had the chance to see and even handle what they described as a “final release” version of the console and its dock, although it wasn’t powered on. The Verge reportedly backed up these claims after consulting with NextHandheld and obtaining enough evidence, including photographs, to consider their account credible.
One interesting claim made by NextHandheld is the console’s name: Nintendo Switch 2. This has been a sort of placeholder name adopted by many since the buzz began that Nintendo was working on a clear successor to the original Switch. So, for those hoping for the “Super Switch,” it might be time to let go of that dream. According to The Verge, the system’s dock resembles the original’s but with a “2” added to the logo.
Additionally, NextHandheld revealed that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers might feature Hall-effect joysticks. Utilizing electromagnetic fields, these joysticks eliminate the need for physical contact between components, thus enhancing reliability and tackling the notorious drift issues experienced with previous Joy-Cons. Interestingly, while Hall-effect joysticks are prevalent in many third-party controllers, they’re less common in official ones, making this a noteworthy advancement.
Going further, the leak hints at an intriguing upgrade: the Switch 2 might boast extra power when docked. NextHandheld cleverly suggested considering if the dock had its own cooling fan was “the right question,” and The Verge noted evidence of vents on the dock itself. Apparently, the dock can draw 60W of power, compared to 45W when the console isn’t docked. This implies potential boosts in graphical performance, possibly through upscaling hardware or by enabling the console to operate in a sort of overclocked performance mode. This nods to the lingering rumors about a “Switch Pro”—a device imagined to support 4K TV display when docked. Though still speculative, this report reignites hopes for 4K Nintendo gameplay.
Adding to the story, The Verge also spotted a U-shaped kickstand on the back of the unit. This design promises greater stability compared to the original Switch’s single, narrow kickstand. Supporting this claim, some rather blurry yet possibly credible photos, separately shared by Reddit user Future31, show a sleek, familiar-looking console sporting a dark gray finish.
NextHandheld also reaffirmed earlier reports suggesting the Switch 2’s Joy-Cons will magnetically attach, a shift from the previous slide rail design. The Verge mentions it has seen images that support this new magnetic feature.
We might not have long to wait before these details are officially verified. According to NextHandheld, Nintendo could unveil the Switch 2 as early as January.
