As I alluded to yesterday, there was a significant amount of gaming on my end this year. Choosing just one Game of the Year for the Nintendo Switch, along with a few honorable mentions, wasn’t feasible. So, be sure to explore my full list of standout Nintendo Switch titles that warrant your attention!
Gimmick! 2
Can you believe it’s been over three decades since Gimmick! launched on the Famicom, Japan’s version of the NES? Fast forward to today, and Gimmick! 2 revisits this classic, promising that notorious NES level of difficulty. Thankfully, as Bitwave Games’ CEO Niklas Istenes shared in our interview, this sequel has been cleverly retooled for a broader audience.
The magic of Gimmick! lies in a unique star summoned by Yumetaro, harnessing weight and momentum for its platforming mechanics. When it debuted on the Famicom (and later a limited NES release in Scandinavia), this physics-centric title was groundbreaking. In this sequel, the star isn’t just for combat and defense. It’s a versatile tool for hitting switches and reaching tricky spots.
SCHiM
Enter the whimsical world of SCHiM, a puzzle platformer with a twist – navigating shadows. As a schim, or the essence of an entity, you find yourself separated from your host. The challenge? A dash against time, hopping shadow to shadow. The journey begins with a tutorial showcasing a slice of your host’s life, from childhood to the many ups and downs of adulthood, offering a touching narrative arc.
Dungeons of Dreadrock 2 – The Dead King’s Secret
This adventure begins with a delightful tune setting the stage. Previously, you descended into dungeons searching for a lost brother. Now, step into the role of the mysterious wizard with a mission to find the Crown of Wisdom in Dreadrock Mountain’s perilous caverns. An intriguing twist: this sequel runs parallel to the events of the first game, presenting a fresh perspective on familiar territory.
Ynglet
Embark on a visually and musically captivating journey with Ynglet. After a transformative explosion, you guide a worm-like entity through a series of escalating challenges. The dynamic soundtrack reacts to your every move, while the hand-drawn aesthetic draws you into this unique universe. New gameplay elements introduce themselves seamlessly, keeping you engaged without overwhelming.
Peglin
Peglin turns the quirky Pachinko format into a fantasy roguelite adventure. Your goal? Reclaim your stolen gold from malicious dragons. Start with the versatile Peglin class, opening the door to a wealth of orbs and relics. Complete challenges to unlock further classes, adding depth to this whimsical quest.
Castaway
Relish in two mini adventure tales within Castaway, taking a nostalgic nod towards The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. As a stranded hero, your dog is missing after a frenzied space escape. Traverse captivating pixel-art environments, solve short but sweet challenges, and enjoy a chiptune soundtrack reminiscent of classic gaming days.
Lords of Exile
Channel your inner warrior in Lords of Exile, an action-packed tribute to the original Castlevania trilogy with some Ninja Gaiden flair. Taking on Gabriel’s quest of vengeance through eight sprawling levels, this game delivers linear yet thoroughly satisfying 2D action that honors its classic inspirations.
Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island
Embark on a cozy adventure in Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island, where Greek mythology meets a modern twist. As Alex, navigate a surprising world of vacationing gods, collecting their memories as you uncover their worldly mementos. It’s a non-linear journey marked by surprises and nostalgia.
Iron Meat
Prepare for an intense 2D run ‘n’ gun experience with Iron Meat, echoing the 16-bit era. Tackle hordes of mutated enemies solo or with a friend, battling against an all-consuming force known as The Meat. With multiple difficulty levels, challenge yourself in an explosive nostalgia-laden journey.
Echo Generation: Midnight Edition
Travel back to the 90s in Echo Generation: Midnight Edition. Lead a band of Maple Town kids, solving eerie mysteries with a supernatural spin. Customize your main character and dive into a tale filled with exploration and discovery. This entry in the Voxrl Trilogy promises a memorable, turn-based experience.
