A seasoned analyst has suggested that if the Nintendo Switch 2 hits the shelves in the first half of 2025, PS5 sales could outpace it in the U.S. Mat Piscatella from Circana also anticipated several months of supply constraints, driven by significant demand for Nintendo’s eagerly awaited next-gen console.
### Can PS5 Outperform Switch 2 Sales in the US if Supply Matches Demand?
Piscatella didn’t delve deeply into the reasons behind his forecast that the PS5 might eclipse the Switch 2 in its inaugural year, except for hinting at supply shortages and a potential late release in 2025. It raises the question of whether this prediction would hold if Nintendo manages to sidestep any hardware shortage issues.
Given that the PS5 is now in the latter stages of its lifecycle, this forecast is quite daring. However, if Grand Theft Auto 6 is launched this year as anticipated, it could significantly propel the demand for Sony’s console.
“I’m projecting Nintendo’s next hardware device to sell 4.3 million units in the US in 2025, provided it launches in the year’s first half, which would represent about a third of all video game console hardware sales that year, excluding PC Portables,” Piscatella shared on Bluesky. “The number of units sold will obviously rely on manufacturing capacities and willingness. Despite that, I still foresee PlayStation 5 leading in total hardware units sold in the US throughout the year.”
