During the Xbox Developer Direct today, we were treated to an exciting new trailer for South of Midnight, which officially announced its release date as April 8, 2025.
The trailer gave us a deeper dive into Hazel’s intriguing abilities. She harnesses a unique blend of traditional weaving with magic, empowering her to battle foes, create objects, and navigate through challenges in her environment. Hazel’s combat is particularly captivating as she “unravels” her enemies, dismantling them with style. Moreover, there’s a hint of customization in her fighting techniques, enabling her to adapt against various adversaries.
Hazel’s journey will take her across different regions, each governed by mystical creatures with rich Southern Gothic backstories. Her mission is to restore these lands by piecing together their scattered memories. The trailer showcased some of these fantastical beings, including an impressively large bird and a colossal crocodile armored with spikes and towering trees sprouting from its back.
Originally unveiled during the Xbox Showcase in 2023, South of Midnight is the latest offering from Compulsion Games, known for We Happy Few. The game transports players to a magic-infused American South, where Hazel embarks on a quest seemingly searching for her mother, all amidst the aftermath of a devastating hurricane. Her magical abilities, known as Weaving, set the stage for encounters with a host of bizarre creatures. The game was teased again at last year’s Xbox Showcase, with a sneak peek offered during a hands-off preview in November.
