Sony’s annual wrap-up of the most downloaded games on PlayStation platforms for 2024 is out, and while there’s not been a huge shake-up compared to PSVR 2’s debut year, we must admit we’re not exactly shocked by the results.
As we approach the two-year mark since PSVR 2’s launch, remarks about the PS5-linked VR headset being overshadowed by a lack of exclusives and the stronger developer ties seen with the original PSVR do circulate. Yet, die-hard fans of the headset stand in its defense.
In its defense, the PSVR 2 is a formidable piece of technology, pushing for sharper visuals and enhanced graphics that surpass even Meta’s current leader, Quest 3. Plus, Sony rolled out a wired adapter last June, letting fans dive into PC VR games. However, the ultimate test is in the games that dominate downloads on the PlayStation Store.

Dominating the charts in both North America and Europe is the unstoppable Beat Saber (2018). This doesn’t reflect poorly on the platform at all; in fact, it remains a top recommendation for new VR users.
Aside from Beat Saber, the sole new releases in 2024 making the list are Vertigo Games’ Metro Awakening, which launched in November 2024 and had only a short window to climb the rankings, and Legendary Tales by Urban Wolf Games, which rolled out its 1.0 version across major VR platforms in February 2024 after a lengthy stint in Early Access on Steam.
To be fair, Vertigo Games’ impressive zombie sequel, Arizona Sunshine 2 (2023), hit the market late in December 2023, leaving it just shy of dismantling the top downloads in last year’s countdown.

As we look ahead, it’s clear that while the PSVR 2 is still drawing players towards some familiar experiences, it remains a significant player in the VR space. Expect many of these staples to hang around, but keep an eye on newcomers as they might shift the landscape in the years to come.
