Snapchat’s parent company, Snap, is stepping up its game by making its cutting-edge Spectacles AR Glasses more accessible to students and educators. They’ve introduced a special educational discount that chops the whopping $1,200 launch price down to a mere $600.
These fifth-generation Spectacles, also known as Spectacles ’24, made their grand entrance in September 2024. Although originally aimed at developers and priced at $100 a month under a year-long commitment, there’s been an obvious barrier. This hefty price tag has been a bit daunting, particularly for students and educators eager to delve into the world of AR app creation and learning.
The latest iteration of Spectacles brings several enhancements over its 2021 predecessor—the fourth-gen model. With improvements such as a broader field of view, an upgrade in resolution, integrated hand-tracking, and a revamped software suite, it’s no wonder the tech is alluring. Yet, the initial cost turned out to be a hurdle for many in the educational sphere.
Now, with the introduction of this educational discount, Snap is offering the Spectacles at a significantly reduced rate: $49.50 per month, spread over the first 12 months. After the initial year, the price stays at $49.50 monthly for ongoing access. Alternatively, there’s an option to make a one-time payment of $594 covering the first year, and then enjoy the device at $49.50 per month thereafter.
To snag this deal, students and teachers simply need a .edu email address or another address from a recognized educational institution. This enticing offer is open to those in supported regions like the US, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, and the Netherlands.
