BioWare, the renowned game developer, is now operating with a team of fewer than 100 people.
According to a recent Bloomberg report, the company’s workforce has seen a significant reduction, dropping by more than half in just two years. Previously, BioWare had a team of over 200 employees.
This dramatic decrease in staff numbers is partly due to last week’s announcement of layoffs as BioWare concentrates on its next Mass Effect game. Among those affected by this strategic shift were writer Trick Weekes and producer Jenn Cheverie.
A segment of this transition also involved the temporary reassignment of BioWare employees to other studios within Electronic Arts.
However, it seems that many employees believed these reassignments were only short-term solutions, not realizing that their new roles would become permanent.
In an announcement addressing these changes, BioWare’s general manager, Gary McKay, stated, “At this point in development, we don’t require the full studio’s involvement.”
He further explained, “We have incredible talent here at BioWare, and we’ve worked diligently over the past few months to place many of our colleagues in relevant roles with other EA teams where their skills are a perfect fit.”
