Exciting news for fans of Ancient Dungeon VR: the engaging rogue-lite dungeon crawler available on PSVR 2 just rolled out an update that introduces multiplayer co-op gameplay.
First arriving on the scene back in 2021 via Steam Early Access and the, now-closed, App Lab for Quest, Ancient Dungeon captured players’ attention as a single-player adventure. Gamers could immerse themselves for over 20 hours in the game’s intricate dungeons, battling it out in physics-based combat against blocky adversaries reminiscent of classic D&D villains like wizards and skeletons.
Quest and SteamVR users have enjoyed a four-player co-op experience since mid-2024, but those playing on PSVR 2 had to wait a bit longer, since its version hit that platform in December 2023 without the multiplayer feature.
Thankfully, that wait is now over as Eric Thullen, the game’s developer, has unveiled a much-anticipated multiplayer update for PSVR 2. This means up to four friends can now explore the game’s intricately designed dungeons, tackle traps, and fend off enemies together in co-op mode.
During a Reddit Q&A, Thullen mentioned that cross-play isn’t available across different platforms just yet. Nevertheless, he assured fans that cross-play functionality with Quest and PC VR is in the pipeline and will be available down the road.
Ancient Dungeon stands out as one of VR’s remarkable indie success narratives. It first caught people’s interest following its successful Kickstarter campaign in 2020, coming through with a beta version that received over 1,000 glowing reviews and a commendable [4.8/5] rating.
Fast forward nearly five years, and the game isn’t slowing down. Regular updates continue to enhance the gameplay, introducing new weapons, cosmetically appealing updates, advanced insight upgrades, additional dungeon floors, and enticing relics. All of this comes in preparation for the game’s eagerly-awaited 1.0 release. According to a Steam update from Thullen’s team, players should expect that final release, but it’s “still a ways to go.”
