Onward, the tactical military simulation shooter from Downpour Interactive, a team now under the Meta umbrella, is gearing up for a significant 2.0 update that’s long overdue. Players have been waiting for this since the last major update dropped almost a year ago.
While Onward hasn’t seen frequent updates post its big ‘Mercenary’ update back in February 2024, it hasn’t been forgotten either. That last update introduced a PvE mode and several graphical improvements, but since then, the enhancements have been more sparse.
Now, Downpour Interactive is preparing to roll out the 2.0 update, which Meta has hinted at in a recent blog post. They promise it to be the most substantial update the game has seen, packed with an array of new content.
So, what can players expect? Well, what’s anticipated is a massive graphical overhaul affecting both weapons and utilities. Also on the docket is a brand-new Operator system featuring 20 unique characters, alongside fresh map content. Detailed information on the full scope of this update should be arriving shortly.
This comes amidst broader changes within the gaming world that impacted Downpour Interactive, including substantial layoffs in 2023. Notably, Dante Buckley, who founded the studio in 2015, stepped down as CEO a month before these changes took place.
For those unfamiliar, Onward first launched on Steam back in 2016 in Early Access and made its way to the original Oculus Quest in Early Access in 2020. The game is renowned for its focus on realistic, squad-based tactics and its meticulous attention to replicating real-world weaponry.
Interested players can find more about Onward on the Horizon Store for Quest 2 and newer, as well as on Steam for PC VR headsets, where it’s typically priced at $25.
