Earlier this week, Steel Wool Studios revealed the much-anticipated release date for “Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic.” Fans can look forward to diving into this new chapter on June 13th, available for the PS5 and PC. However, an intriguing twist has emerged—while the game was initially showcased as compatible with the PSVR 2, all references to VR support have mysteriously disappeared from the studio’s latest marketing materials, leading to some raised eyebrows among the gaming community.
The game was first introduced at PAX West 2024 with a playable PSVR 2 demo and was hailed as a potential VR and flatscreen combination, promising a unique experience from the reputed XR developers. Steel Wool Studios, having secured an early $5 million investment from HTC back in 2016, has since carved out a niche for creating immersive VR-native experiences like “Hello Neighbor: Search and Rescue” (2023) and the previous titles “FNAF: Help Wanted” (2019) and its sequel “FNAF: Help Wanted 2” (2024).
But now, with the recent unveiling of FNAF’s newest installment’s release date, all hints of PSVR 2 support have been scrubbed clean from marketing channels. This includes the PlayStation Store listing for “FNAF: Secret of the Mimic,” which archive records reveal was initially set to accommodate optional PSVR 2 support, but has since been altered.
The only hint of VR compatibility mentioned lately was a brief note in an official PlayStation blog post timed with the release announcement on February 12th, which has since vanished. Up to this point, Steel Wool Studios has been silent about whether or when PSVR 2 support might make an appearance. There’s also uncertainty about whether the soon-to-be-released PC versions on the Epic Games Store and Steam will feature VR options.
Though we’ve reached out to Steel Wool Studios for clarification, confirmation eludes us. We’ll be sure to provide updates as more information surfaces, whether it might imply a postponed launch of the VR mode or another strategic play altogether.
