Valve, the renowned gaming behemoth, has decided to integrate the complete client and server code of Team Fortress 2 into its Source engine SDK. This exciting announcement, shared through a blog post, opens up a world of possibilities for developers looking to craft fresh game mods for the beloved online shooter. Now, fans have the unique opportunity to “change, extend, or rewrite” elements of the game to their heart’s content.
However, there’s a catch. Those diving into mod creation using this SDK won’t be cashing in from their inventive tweaks. As explained by Valve, the SDK is strictly for non-commercial use. This means that any mod developed should be free of charge, and the content within them should also remain free. Interestingly, TF2 mods can still find their way onto the Steam Store. Once published, they’ll be visible in the Steam game list as new experiences.
Valve also touched on the importance of the community’s contributions to Team Fortress 2 over the years. They highlighted that players have heavily invested in their TF2 inventories, largely thanks to the dedicated work of contributors in the Steam Workshop. Presently, a significant portion of in-game items owe their existence to this hard-working community. To uphold this tradition, Valve is urging mod creators to honor this relationship and steer clear of exploiting these contributions for profit. Ideally, mods should still allow players to access their inventories, as long as it fits within the mod’s framework.
