Korean game developers at Pixelity have recently revealed they’re working on an XR game inspired by the iconic ’90s anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion. According to Pixelity’s blog, they’ve secured an official licensing agreement with Studio Khara from Japan to bring this project to life. The game is planned as a three-part series, drawing from the storyline of all 26 episodes of the original anime, and the first installment is already underway with a planned release in 2026.
For those well-versed in the world of Evangelion, the excitement is palpable. The anime itself was a groundbreaking force in the ’90s that reignited Japan’s anime scene, leaving lasting influence on countless shows that followed.
The narrative, set in the seemingly distant future of 2015 (remember, this was imagined in 1995), centers on Shinji Ikari. He’s selected to pilot the Evangelion, a humanoid combat machine, in humanity’s desperate struggle against mysterious entities known as Angels, threatening the futuristic cityscape of Tokyo-3.
While Pixelity hasn’t specified the platforms just yet, they have shared that players will traverse a variety of locations, experiencing the same timeline and events as the anime. Players can look forward to embarking on missions and engaging in dynamic battles, all wrapped in an immersive XR experience.
A standout feature of the game will be its collaborative play elements, where players can interact with beloved Evangelion characters. This interactive component is aimed at drawing in longtime fans, promising the exhilarating action-adventure experience Pixelity is known for.
Founded in 2017, Pixelity has already made a name for itself with VR titles like Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018). They’re also developing two other VR titles, The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.
This project marks a significant milestone as it’s the first official Evangelion game designed for home VR systems. While Evangelion has been adapted for VR before, such as in the 2017 Bandai Namco project, Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls, it was previously limited to specific locations like VR ZONE in Shinjuku for a finite period.
With this new game in the works, Evangelion fans worldwide have much to look forward to as they anticipate stepping into this legendary world through an entirely new lens.
