There’s growing buzz about the potential starters for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and all signs seem to point towards Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie. Last year, Nintendo teased the game with a brief cinematic trailer that revealed some key features while leaving plenty to speculate about.
The first look at Pokemon Legends: Z-A confirmed its setting in the vibrant Lumiose City of the Kalos region. Mega Evolutions are set to make a triumphant return, and a few familiar Pokemon have been confirmed to reappear. Yet, much of the game remains cloaked in mystery, especially when it comes to the starter Pokemon.
Although there’s no official confirmation from The Pokemon Company about which starters we’ll actually see in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the evidence suggesting it will be Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie is piling up. These three were the iconic starters from Pokemon X and Y, both based in the Kalos region, which makes them fitting candidates. Not long ago, a notable leaker hinted at their return, and the recent promotional artwork for the 2025 Pokemon World Championships featuring Fennekin and Chespin has only fueled these rumors.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A Rumored Starters
Considering the new game is set in the Kalos region, many fans might have naturally assumed Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie would lead the roster as starters. This idea seemed to deviate from what was seen with Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which, despite its Sinnoh setting, offered a mix of starters from various regions. But it looks like Pokemon Legends: Z-A might stick closer to the expected lineup, bringing the original Kalos starters back into the limelight.
Even if Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie do end up being the chosen three, fans shouldn’t expect them to be entirely unchanged. Whispers from reputable leakers suggest these starters might sport new characteristics—perhaps unique final evolutions or brand-new Mega Evolutions. Right now, fans can only guess, but the wait for solid details is nearly over.
Fans should circle February 27 on their calendars. As part of the Pokemon Day festivities, a special Pokemon Presents broadcast promises more announcements. It’s speculated that this will finally pull back the curtain on Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s much-anticipated starters. Make sure to tune in at 9 a.m. ET to catch all the announcements live.
