Microsoft’s latest update for Windows 11 is bringing some exciting changes, particularly when it comes to monitoring CPU usage. Task Manager is set to revamp its approach to calculating CPU utilization, aligning it more closely with third-party tools known for their accuracy.
Recognizing that the existing performance metrics in Task Manager haven’t quite stacked up against its third-party counterparts, Microsoft is stepping up its game. This upcoming update will tweak how Task Manager calculates CPU usage, adopting similar methods to those used by other tools, making it far more effective for users.
“We are beginning to roll out a change to the way Task Manager calculates CPU utilization for the Processes, Performance, and Users pages. Task Manager will now use the standard metrics to display CPU workload consistently across all pages and align with industry standards and third-party tools,” a Microsoft representative shared.
While the specific changes in calculation methods remain under wraps, what’s clear is the promise of consistency across the Processes, Performance, and Users pages. This means users can expect Task Manager to offer figures comparable to those on popular third-party platforms, reducing the need for alternatives like HWINFO. However, until the update officially arrives, we’ll be waiting in anticipation.
In a bid to cater to everyone, Microsoft has also included an optional column called CPU Utility in the “Details” tab for those who prefer the current method. This backward compatibility option is part of the comprehensive Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3360, encompassing the 24H2 update. Over time, these changes will be rolled out more broadly, and it’s clear Microsoft is committed to enhancing user experience across the board.
