Available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, this game truly captivates the viewer with its stunning portrayal of humanity. From the very first look, the faces you encounter in this game are strikingly realistic, each one is brimming with emotion and hidden stories. It’s that compelling need to delve into what these faces might reveal that keeps me glued to the screen. I’m about three hours into the beginning of Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, a fresh offering from the minds behind Life Is Strange, Don’t Nod. Instantly, the nostalgic resemblance to their earlier work is evident. Much like its predecessor, this game captures the messy beauty of teenage years, full of both awkwardness and intensity. What sets it apart, though, is the layered storyline—it offers a glimpse into these characters’ lives in their 40s as they reflect on a pivotal summer during the ’90s. Being part of the ’90s teen crowd myself, now comfortably in my 40s, I’m genuinely curious to see how this time shift enriches their stories.
Taking on the role of Swann, who once dreamt of being a filmmaker, allows for a unique gaming experience. With Swann’s camcorder in hand, you get to piece together videos, creating montages that are refreshingly genuine. It’s clear that Swann follows her inner muse without being restrained by the “right way” of doing things. This mirrors the boundless creativity that is so crucial for young artists finding their footing. The vibe of the game is just spot on—it’s a place you want to soak in and get lost in. Although the story’s trajectory is still a mystery to me, I’m eager to dive back in and discover what events unfolded that unforgettable summer. This weekend is reserved for seeing just how Lost Records brings this intriguing narrative full circle. — Carolyn Petit
