After Bloober Team wowed us with their phenomenal Silent Hill 2 remake, I’ve got high hopes for their future horror endeavors. Their upcoming game, Cronos: The New Dawn, already looks stunning and seems to channel the chilling essence of Dead Space—a franchise known for its gruesome charm.
Wojciech Piejko and Jacek Zięba, co-directors of Cronos, wear their influences on their sleeves. In a recent unveiling of the sci-fi survival horror game, they openly acknowledge being inspired by John Carpenter’s The Thing, the German series Dark, and Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys. Add into the mix games like Dead Space and Dark Souls, and you’ve got a sense of the thrilling ride Cronos is set to deliver. The game features elements reminiscent of Dead Space, such as horrifyingly mutated human enemies, an over-the-shoulder shooting perspective, and a satisfyingly gruesome limb-severing gameplay mechanic. However, Piejko assures us that their take on dismemberment brings a unique twist to that familiar experience.
Following the cinematic trailer for Cronos released last October, Piejko and Zięba shared tantalizing gameplay insights in a new developer diary featured by Bloober Team this Thursday. They detail the intriguing story of the protagonist, known as the Traveller. Drawing parallels to a deep-sea diver exploring the vast unknown, the Traveller ventures into the remnants of human civilization to rescue survivors. The game’s narrative unfolds in an alternate reality, shattered by an event known as the Change, which, in this universe’s backstory, obliterated our world back in the 1980s.
Having previously made their mark on Bloober Team’s titles like Observer and The Medium, Piejko and Zięba bring a wealth of experience in crafting sci-fi and psychological horror. Cronos: The New Dawn is a fresh and original project for Bloober, who are also collaborating with Konami on a follow-up title, promising exciting things on the horizon.
