If you’ve ever dreamed of diving into No Man’s Sky, channeling your inner dino-loving adventurer who somehow snagged Jennifer Aniston, today just might be your day. The latest update from Hello Games, dubbed Relics, invites players to venture into the realm of alien fossil hunting.
This comes right on the heels of the expansive Worlds update last January, which introduced “billions” of new celestial bodies, including massive gas planets and surreal flying squid that would give you a hard time for trying to fish them.
Hello Games’ blog post about the Relics update, complemented by a video, spills the beans on its latest feature: space paleontology. Think Ross Geller from Friends – when he’s not grumbling over sandwiches or dressing up for the holidays – but in space. Now, you too can embark on an interstellar quest to discover and assemble “hundreds of unique bones” in your very own museum. Got a creative itch to put leg bones where skulls belong and convince the living alien races that they descend from a peculiar breed called the Fartongueians? Go ahead and give it a shot.
But hold on – it’s not all fun and games. The update also introduces Reanimated Guardians, formidable stone lifeforms that slumber near planetary fossil beds. They’re the protectors of these ancient sites, standing guard against any Traveler naïve enough to disturb their rest. Plus, other dormant titans like Living Stone Sentries and Colossal Stone Effigies, remnants of bygone alien civilizations, await discovery on relic worlds.
On your fossil quest, you might even encounter living fossils like Titanic Boneworms or “skeletal fauna” roaming bone-laden planets and certain purple star systems. At Space Stations, you can meet Fossil Collectors to sell or trade your fossilized treasures, or even cook with bones if you’re feeling ambitious.
And don’t forget about the Galactic Paleontology Society’s new expedition, Relics. It offers enticing rewards like a sentient rock-powered jetpack, a transformative appearance override to look like a sentient rock, and even a skeletal pet to keep you company on your adventures.
Are you ready to embrace your inner space Ross? We’d love to hear all about it!
