If you’ve been eagerly awaiting a chance to immerse yourself in the Game of Thrones universe, you’ll want to keep an eye out for Game of Thrones: Kingsroad. This upcoming free-to-play action-adventure RPG is set to arrive soon on both PC and mobile platforms, promising to be right up your alley.
This game introduces a fresh, original storyline set in the captivating realm of Westeros, during the latter part of Season 4. Players will step into the shoes of a newly crafted character, an heir to House Tyre, which is a lesser-known house from the North. As the story unfolds, you’ll find yourself entangled in the intricate political webs of the realm.
Your journey through the game will bring you face-to-face with iconic characters such as Jon Snow, Samwell Tarly, Lord Varys, and Cersei Lannister. You’ll also have the opportunity to witness events that were never shown on the series, like the shifting allegiances within House Bolton. The game lets you explore legendary locations including King’s Landing, Castle Black, and Highgarden, each meticulously recreated to capture their appearance from the show.
The game’s open-world exploration is designed to give players the freedom to roam through these famous locations, as well as venture into the wilderness beyond the Wall and discover hidden towns. Each town offers unique quests and challenges that tie back into the rich lore of the Game of Thrones universe.
Beyond the main quests that drive the narrative, there are numerous activities to engage in throughout Westeros. Optional tasks related to Factions and Estates will help you earn money, gear, and crafting materials, allowing for character customization that aligns with your preferred playstyle.
Given that this is Westeros, danger lurks around every corner—not just from political foes but from people desperate enough to kill for survival. This is where the action-RPG combat comes into play.
Your character’s combat prowess is shaped by the class you choose. You can opt to be a Knight, inspired by the knights of Westeros, wielding a longsword with precision. Alternatively, you might become a Sellsword, relying on sheer brute force, drawn from the strength of Wildlings and Dothraki. Or you can choose the path of an Assassin, using double daggers with lethal agility, inspired by the Faceless Men and Dorne’s skilled fighters.
Each class provides unique gear, traits, and skills, letting you tailor your character’s growth. The trait trees, divided into Attack, Defense, and Support, offer various nodes with specific effects. You can become a specialist in one area or balance your skills for versatility. With four skill slots available, players can equip special abilities they unlock, each class boasting its own unique set of skills.
In combat, success depends on reading your opponents’ attacks and knowing how to react. You can guard and parry, but some enemy assaults will require you to dodge instead. This means staying vigilant, analyzing enemy patterns, and seizing the right moment to strike. Strategic thinking will be essential to conquering your foes.
Aside from the primary single-player storyline, the game features a multiplayer mode called Altar of Memories. Here, you can team up with others to take on legendary creatures such as ice spiders the size of hounds, unicorns from Skagos, majestic griffins, and grotesque cockatrices.
Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is set to launch in Early Access on March 26.
