Days Gone Remastered is set to rev up and hit the PlayStation 5 on April 25. This upgraded version promises to take full advantage of the PS5’s capabilities, offering new modes, features, and technical enhancements. Gamers can dive into fresh experiences like Horde Assault, Permadeath, and Speedrun. And for those on PC, these modes will be accessible through the Broken Road DLC. Whether you’re a newcomer hopping on the Drifter bike for the first time or a veteran of the world, there’s a whole new array of content waiting to be explored. For more insights on these updates, make sure to check out our full announcement on the Days Gone Remastered blog.
Among the significant additions is Horde Assault, a survival arcade mode that ups the ante for players looking for challenges. To get a taste of what’s in store, watch the gameplay trailer showcasing this mode.
What is Horde Assault mode?
Horde Assault reinvents gameplay with its relentless, high-intensity style. It pushes players to achieve high scores against ever-growing hordes and a mix of adversaries like Breakers, Reachers, and even Rager bears! The longer you withstand these fearsome foes, the more intense the difficulty becomes. This mode is designed around the mantra "This World Comes For You," projecting Days Gone’s core gameplay into a thrilling, endless encounter where you’re constantly on your toes. It’s your battlefield, so prove your might to those Freakers!
You’ll kick off Horde Assault in Cascade, armed with just a sidearm. Your mission: survive the initial onslaught of Freakers to make it to your Drifter bike, crucial for navigating the expansive area. Along the way, seek out Supply Boxes for powerful weapon upgrades—over 20, with a new flamethrower not seen in Story mode. Each Supply Box offers random drops, resetting with every new start, which makes each run fresh and unpredictable.
In the midst of survival, complete Side Jobs to refill resources and gain additional XP. These tasks are essential; running low on ammo with a massive horde on your tail is a situation no one wants! Survive up to 30 minutes on any map, and you’ll face the Ultimate Horde—a relentless, never-ending wave that truly tests your limits. But words can only say so much; you’ll have to experience its intensity yourself.
Survive
Advance through levels and earn in-game rewards like new character options, patch cosmetics, and unique Injectors, which significantly enhance gameplay. If you’re familiar with Injectors from the main story, you’ll appreciate this revamped system in Horde Assault. Here, you can collect up to 24 distinct Injectors – 12 Positive and 12 Negative. Positive Injectors boost your score but also ramp up the challenges, while Negative Injectors may decrease your score but offer advantages for survival.
We don’t want to spoil everything, but here’s a sneak peek at a couple of Injectors:
-
Exploding Freakers: This causes Freakers to explode upon defeat, clearing space amid substantial hordes—a tool to help thin the numbers.
- Wanted: It immediately sets you at the maximum heat level. The longer you last under this setting, the tougher it gets, making it a true test of survival skills. Only the fittest will prevail.
Throughout your Horde Assault adventure, progress along a Reward path that includes 35 levels, unlocking rewards like Injectors, character skins, and patch cosmetics at each stage. Additionally, six characters that have never been playable before—including fan favorites like O’Brian and Skizzo—are now part of the ensemble.
Patches return for those familiar with our 2019 Challenges, serving as purely cosmetic elements to flaunt among friends. The revamped Photo Mode will show them off beautifully. Plus, once earned, these patches integrate into your story progression. Besides the Reward path, there are bonus incentives during the Reputation Phase for achieving target scores in all four regions, including a sought-after prize tied to your bike. Intriguing, right?
Although Horde Assault serves as end-game content, you have the option to dive in as soon as you start Days Gone Remastered. New players might want to navigate the story first to master combat and mechanics before taking on new challenges. But if you’re craving action, jump right in to explore Days Gone’s unique world and formidable hordes. This mode offers an additional 10 hours of content, adding to what’s already a robust gaming package from Days Gone, promising plenty of exciting moments.
