A talented VR modder known as Holydh has rolled out an exciting new plugin for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Definitive Edition. Dubbed the 6DoF UEVR Plugin, this mod brings modded PC VR support to those playing the game on Steam.
Back in August, fans were disappointed when Meta and Rockstar announced an indefinite delay to their VR port of San Andreas for the Quest. This decision disappointed many but equally inspired Rockstar’s passionate modding community to take matters into their own hands. These dedicated fans wanted to experience iconic moments, like Big Smoke’s notoriously huge fast-food order, in VR. Rockstar had already faced a rough patch with their GTA series, dealing with substantial leaks, staff reductions, and less-than-stellar rollouts of the so-called “Definitive Editions,” including that of San Andreas.
What Holydh offers isn’t your run-of-the-mill mod. It doesn’t just shift classic controls into a VR environment. Instead, this port delivers a complete first-person experience, with 6DOF motion controls and enhanced camera functionality throughout both gameplay and cutscenes. The technology behind this is an improved version of modder Praydog’s UEVR injector, a tool that brings VR capability to a wide range of PC games developed on Unreal Engine 4.8 or later.
Curious to see this mod in action? You’re in for a treat. For those eager to dive deeper, detailed information about the mod and UEVR can be found on its Nexus Mods page. Just a heads-up for potential users: this mod is strictly compatible with the Steam edition of San Andreas Definitive Edition. Sadly, versions from the Epic Games Store and Rockstar Launcher won’t work with it.
Rockstar’s history with fan mods has been somewhat contentious, notably when they took action against the Luke Ross VR mod for Grand Theft Auto 5. Still, Holydh remains optimistic, believing this effort “should be alright.” The reasoning? The mod is available for free, and the files aren’t directly from Rockstar, unlike the initial paid approach of the Luke Ross mod.
