GTA 5’s single-player might have done enough to stamp it as a legendary game on its own. Yet, it’s the online component, along with the role-playing servers it birthed, that has secured its spot as one of gaming’s giants. As we look towards GTA 6, there’s no doubt Rockstar is plotting to replicate and possibly enhance this successful formula with a fresh version of GTA Online. However, everyone is curious about the innovations and changes that might be coming. A recent report has possibly given us clues about what’s to come. It seems Rockstar has been chatting not only with well-known GTA creators but also with influencers from Fortnite and Roblox, potentially aiming to expand into a metaverse-style platform with increased user-generated content.
We haven’t heard any official updates about GTA 6 in over a year now, despite the buzzing community spinning theories—some as wild as involving the moon—about when we might expect more info or even a new trailer. While the game’s release is rumored to be scheduled for later this year, there’s still much mystery surrounding what could be deemed the most anticipated release of the decade.
A report from Digiday, based on insights from three unnamed industry insiders, has shed some light, though. It appears Rockstar might be looking to embrace the metaverse trend, just like titans such as Roblox and Fortnite, which thrive by allowing community members to craft and even monetize their unique experiences and game modes. Rockstar seems to be taking a page from their book for the future of GTA 6.
According to Digiday’s report, which was also flagged by VGC, “Rockstar Games has been in discussions with key Roblox and Fortnite creators, as well as those dedicated to GTA content, discussing the potential for custom experiences within the new game. These talks aim to let creators tweak the game’s settings and assets to integrate their own intellectual properties—and perhaps even brand partners—into GTA’s expansive digital playfield.”
For now, Digiday notes that things are still in a flexible stage, with Rockstar not having set anything in stone. Yet, custom game modes like RP (role-playing) servers seem poised to play a significant role. Although RP has been a vital part of GTA 5’s continued popularity on streaming platforms like Twitch and YouTube, Rockstar stayed on the sidelines of the role-playing community for quite a while. The acquisition of Cfx.re, the minds behind some top RP mods, earlier in 2023 signals Rockstar’s intention to bring this community into its fold.
If Rockstar begins to officially support modders, RP server hosts, or those interested in creating custom modes outside RP, similar to Roblox and Fortnite, they could monetize these ventures. Creators would naturally get their share, but Rockstar would benefit too, opening the door for other brands to step into this evolving metaverse space.
While nothing has been officially confirmed by Rockstar at this point, it appears a logical move, considering GTA’s massive impact and how successful its competitors are utilizing user-generated content strategies.
