Growing up in the ’90s, I have a soft spot for Polly Pocket, that charming little dollhouse that could come along with me anywhere. Tiny Garden stirs those nostalgic feelings by blending a gardening simulator and a decorating game, all within a delightful Polly Pocket-style container. The game unfolds through days fueled by a delightful hand crank. While it might seem like a toy, Tiny Garden is as much about solving puzzles and having some whimsical fun. Although the full release isn’t until April 8, I’ve been lucky enough to play the demo during the Steam Next Fest.
Tiny Garden is enchanting, especially with the first spark of magic it unveils—growing plants. You start with the basics: radishes, carrots, and cacti, and gradually progress to more challenging flora. This is where the game’s puzzle aspect shines. The soil’s properties shift based on the last plants you nurtured there, requiring some thoughtful planning for what to plant next. As you cultivate your garden, you’ll also collect plants to trade for charming decorations to personalize both the inside and outside of your Polly Pocket-inspired world.
Beneath the surface of this playful activity lies a narrative: “Before you took over Tiny Garden, others cherished this toy,” as developer Ao Norte shares on the Steam store page. “Through letters, you’ll discover a touching tale, reminding us that objects bear the imprints of lives once lived and stories once shared. Each new find is more than just an item—it’s a window into a richer connection.”
For me, Tiny Garden is pure joy—a simple escape amid life’s chaos. Despite its vast array of activities and decoration styles, the game has a core message: just create. Take your time, explore your creativity, and enjoy the surprises that emerge along the way. This charming little package offers so much to enjoy, packing in a punch of wonder that resonates long after you stop playing.
