Rec Room always offers an array of first-party adventures, perfect for playing either with your friends or with new folks you meet online. Their latest addition, ‘Run the Block,’ is already making waves. Drawing inspiration from the classic Dreamcast game Jet Set Radio, launched back in 2000, this new offering is ready to capture the hearts of players.
The multiplayer mini-game ‘Run the Block’ debuted on December 11th and has already drawn in over a million eager players. Much like Jet Set Radio, it challenges you to compete against up to nine other players. You’ll find yourself navigating through an urban landscape, racing and parkouring with finesse.
Although you won’t find Jet Set Radio’s iconic 2000s style rollerblades here, get ready to run, jump, and grind along the massive lines that snake through the city. You can even add your own personal graffiti tags to the vibrant, mural-filled environment.
Compared to previous years, Rec Room’s output of first-party games has been a bit sparse, with the pet farming simulator ‘My Little Monster’ being its standout entry recently. Alongside its own content, Rec Room has also focused on expanding its branded content offerings. Fans have seen avatar packs from the ‘Monster High’ series and even content from Bungie’s Destiny become available on the platform. Throughout the past year, it seems Rec Room has been more invested in enhancing its creator tools. Players can now build more complex worlds and create assets that they can sell as part of the game’s creator economy. Excitingly, full-body avatars were introduced earlier this year, giving users even greater customization options.
This development follows on the heels of Rec Room’s release on the Nintendo Switch in November. It’s now accessible on an impressive range of devices, including PC VR, all Quest headsets, the original PSVR, iOS, Android, Pico, Xbox, and PlayStation.
